Bed bugs have been making quite the comeback here recently and Carmichael is no exception to this infestation. Bed bugs have been showing up in five star hotels which goes to show how easily they can be transported to a new place without a person actually knowing they are transporting them.
Identify Bed Bugs
Bed bugs can be identified by their small oval wingless bodies in a red or mahogany color and typically 1/5 inch long. They are all flat however the younger (immature) bed bugs will be a smaller size and a yellowish color.
Locations to Find Bed Bugs
Even though their name suggests they can only be found in beds this is not the case at all. Bed bugs can hide in any crack or crevice of furniture. The most common places to find bed bugs include:
- Box Springs
- Behind switchplates
- Around windows
- Around doors
- Under night stands
- Furniture with hollow legs
- Between folds on curtains
- Inside loose wallpaper
- In upholstered furniture
This is only a minor list of the many places bed bugs can hide in but gives you a general idea that many times when bed bug control is in order your bedroom won’t likely be the only place requiring treatment.
Bed Bugs Bite
Bed bugs do bite, hence the saying “Don’t let the bed bugs bite!” Bed bugs will, however, feed on your blood while you are asleep. They are nocturnal insects. They will pierce your skin with two stylets. One is for obtaining your fluids and the other injects saliva to numb your skin so you don’t feel the bed bug feeding on you.
Most bed bugs feed up to ten minutes before returning to their hiding spot. The bite can resemble that of a pin prick which is why many people do not realize they’re being bitten when it actually occurs.
The bite from one of these pests may become swollen after some time. It will most likely itch and be irritated if you continue scratching it. They do not carry diseases but that’s no reason to let them continue feeding on you once you’ve discovered them.
